MINIBUS FOR YUM CHILDREN'S VILLAGE (November, 2006)
A few weeks ago, thanks to Virginia Thomas, Chairperson of SD Canada, Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM) was informed of a new marketing tool through GiveMeaning to help raise funds for a minibus for the Children's Village in Cipanas. GiveMeaning, an award-winning online social network for charitable giving, is an innovator in viral marketing, an online tool to raise funds.
At the time, we desperately needed to replace our old minibus with a newer, safer and more reliable vehicle to transport children to and from schools every day. The children’s village is home to about 50 children, ranging in age from 6 – 17. Their current vehicle requires more and more repairs, which means that funds that could be used for the children’s care are being rapidly depleted. In addition, the minibus breaks down en route which is quite disturbing for the children.
Within seven weeks, through GiveMeaning and direct donations, we raised about 75% of our $12,300 goal. A few days ago a Subud member through his enterprise offered to match new contributions for the minibus to reach the goal. An appeal was sent out by YUM and we have now surpassed our goal.  Any surplus donations we receive above the cost of the vehicle, insurance, etc. will be used to repair the buildings, which has not been done in 10 years.
A big thanks to all those who have contributed to this success!

WORKING AT CHILD'S GARDEN OF PEACE (October, 2006)
Larisa Sunderland lives in New York City with her family, but spent 2 months this summer in Brazil as a volunteer for A Child's Garden of Peace. This is her description of her experience.
"This summer, I had the opportunity to work with my aunt on a community project she started in southern Brazil called a Child's Garden of Peace.  When I committed myself to living there with her friends from the community for six weeks, I was ignorant of the enormity of the impact the summer would have on me."

The grant for Yogya relief also includes funding for the pre-school teacher training programme and aid requested from other NGOs.
Marmitasari and Wawan should be particularly congratulated on this success, as well as Mailia for her excellent accounting reports, and all those involved in the smooth running of the project.

MY SUMMER IN BRAZIL (September, 2006)
Myra Margolin (USA) spent the summer in Brazil working with Illene Pevec and the Child's Garden of Peace Project. Myra writes:
“One of the lovely things about working with Illene all these years is that she has given me many opportunities to do things I have never done before. The first year I came, I had never taught art.  After being in Brazil, I was able to return to New York and get a job teaching art at a camp..."

Dr. Eliana Garzon, founder of Asociacion Vivir Health Education Program in Ecuador, was recently selected by Ashoka as a Social Entrepreneur for her innovative work with health education. http://www.ashoka.org. Recently, Eliana attended the Latin-American Gathering organized to celebrate the 25 years of the Ashoka Foundation which was held in Buenos Aries. Ashoka in Sanskrit means 'the active absence of sorrow'. I also discovered that Mauricio Wild, founder of the Pestalozzi School, was named as an Ashoka Fellow in 1995.

2007 MITHRA FOUNDATION CALENDAR (September, 2006)
Maria Blakey-Sevrin has created a 2007 calendar of her paintings, inspired by images of the project, to sell as a fundraiser for Mithra Foundation. The calendar is A4 size closed and A3 open, with an image for each month. The calendar is in French, English and German and includes a page of text describing the work of the Foundation. The calendar is selling for 10€/7£/12US$/16AU$ including postage, 25% of the profits will go to the Mithra Foundation.
From Maria... "... my aim in creating the calendar was to publicize the work of the Mithra Foundation. Originally I wanted to give 50% of the profits to Mithra. However it took so long to put it together, long after the paintings were finished, many hours spent in front of the computer and all the costs of production even before printing that I realized I couldn't reasonably stay with that percentage. Someone advised me that Bapak recommended 25% in such projects and what is really important for Mithra is spreading the word about their work."
To order one or several calendars or for more information contact Maria Blakey-Sevrin at: mariablakey@wanadoo.fr Payment can be made by money order or by cheque (in
euros or pounds) and sent to: MARIA BLAKEY-SEVRIN 6 RUE ST MARY  04300, FORCALQUIER LES ALPES DE HAUTE PROVENCE, FRANCE.
