Environment

SDIA often works with disadvantaged communities that reside in ecologically sensitive ecosystems. These rural populations often rely on traditional agricultural livelihoods that are vulnerable to climate change, extreme weather events, and environmental destruction – from both natural and man-made causes. SDIA provides the guidance and assistance that these communities need in order to provide for themselves while still protecting the natural environment.

We support projects that:

  • Encourage small home or “kitchen” gardens as a means for people to achieve food independence and security.
  • Educate farmers regarding sustainable agriculture, which respects traditional livelihoods while ensuring that the environment is protected for current and future generations.
  • Champion organic growing practices that do not rely on harmful pesticides, chemicals or additives.
  • Help community leaders partner with government and commercial stakeholders to find eco-friendly alternatives to the chemical extraction and processing of natural resources.
  • Mobilize to provide emergency aid to communities affected by extreme weather and/or natural disasters
