Your donation will improve quality of life for impoverished older people in Colombia.
In Colombia, many old people are at risk due to family neglect and abandonment. Mis Corazones Alegres (MCA), in the city of Medellín, Colombia, is a home for poor and disadvantaged elderly, most of whom are suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s and other physical problems and cognitive disorders. The facility is a model of care for the elderly in Colombia, providing emotional support, companionship, nutrition, physiotherapy, art, music and medical services for up to 33 full-time and day patients under their care.
Among the elderly people treated at MCA there is a prevalence of common chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, dementia, Parkinson’s and malnutrition. Individualized therapeutic diets have been implemented for many of the residents. At present the Foundation – which has no state support – needs help to adapt the protein component of its menu to meet the daily nutritional requirements recommended by the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF).
Adequate nutritional support is an intervention strategy that can help stop the degeneration of altered cognitive function, especially with the intake of vitamins such as vitamin B12 and folic acid which are recommended for the prevention and / or treatment of dementias like Alzheimer. Some nutritional supplements can assist in the management of conditions such as Alzheimer’s due to their provision of enzymes such as B12 that help prevent the formation of high levels of homocysteine associated with severe cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
Seven older adults at MCA need integral nutritional intervention. In addition to nutritional support, they are offered multisensory activities, especially osteo-muscular exercises that promote the functioning of insulin, and thus positively influence the biological utilization of nutrients. Funding is required to provide two jars of the daily Advance supplement to cover the requirements of seven older persons over a six-month period. The current cost per unit is $15 USD.
SDIA is seeking to raise $5,940 USD to support Mis Corazones Alegres in this initiative.
Long Term Impact
Seven older adults will be given a better quality of life as their degenerative conditions will be better managed, and financial pressure will be taken off the institution as resources will be freed up to improve the quality care given to all the residents.
